Ramiro Zúñiga, M.D., M.B.A., FAAFP
Dr. Zúñiga is a Medical Director for California Health & Wellness, a Managed Care Medi-Cal health plan that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Centene Corporation. He has responsibilities in Utilization Management, Case Management, Quality Improvement, and other operational areas of the health plan.
Dr. Zúñiga is originally from Cúcuta, Colombia. He received his M.D. degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogotá, Colombia. After immigrating to the U.S. he completed a Fellowship in Medical Genetics and Cytogenetics in Milwaukee, WI. He then completed his Family Medicine Residency training at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Zúñiga has completed faculty development fellowship training at UC San Francisco and program Director training with the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors. He holds a M.B.A. degree from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management.
Ramiro worked for the Tehama County Health Center and Skilled Nursing Facility from 1996 until 1999. He then joined the San Joaquin General Hospital Family Medicine Residency program in Stockton and served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine for several years. He was the FM Residency Program Director from 2008 until 2014. He has received multiple recognition awards for his clinical, teaching, and residency director roles. Dr. Zúñiga is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma business school academic honor society.
Dr. Zúñiga holds FM faculty appointments at the departments of Family Medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine, Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and St. George’s University School of Medicine. He continues to teach FM residents and medical students one day per week and serves as Secretary of the Sacramento Latino Medical Association (SaLMA).
