California Research Center for the Biology of HIV in Minorities

Pilot Projects Core

The Pilot Projects Core supports the research needs of the Center members located at UC Davis and Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory of the California Department of Health Services.  The mission of the core is to manage and develop the Center as a multi-institutional program that develops core resources and supports the Center members in AIDS-related research activities.

Funds are provided to innovative pilot studies through a competitive review process instituted by the Pilot Projects Core.  The core supports meritorious scientific studies for short periods of time, allowing researchers to collect the preliminary data necessary for external peer-reviewed research applications.  The projects that are supported focus on the primary goals of the Center which are to increase understanding of HIV/AIDS in under represented minorities and by gender.  Emphasis is placed on training and development of junior researchers, as well as women and under-represented researchers.  Training programs and activities are available through the Clinical Core, Virology Core, Immunology Core and Biostatistics and Bioinformatics services through the Administrative Core.

In summary, the Pilot Projects Core is a valuable resource of funding for HIV/AIDS researchers and new investigators for their innovative research projects, perform proof-of-concept experiment, obtain preliminary results and seek extramural funding.
