What is considered an exposure? There are two types of exposures that one can sustain. One is from a sharp injury with a bloody object. The other is from blood or infectious body fluid exposure to non intact skin, eyes or mucous membrane. Blood to intact skin is not a true exposure. See Infectious body fluids.
Blood/Body fluids exposure risk is low, even from an infectious patient. Your exposure will be reviewed at the time you contact the BBP surveillance nurse or she receives your exposure report form.
Infectious body fluids
Blood, fluids (cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, amniotic, synovial), seminal or vaginal secretions, or bloody fluids are considered infectious.
Non-infectious
Feces, Urine, sweat, tears, vomit, sputum, saliva, GI feedings, trach or ventilator secretions are not considered infectious, unless these fluids are bloody.
Needlesticks are a larger concern and have a higher risk of conversion if it is a “hollow” bore needle that has recently been in an artery or vein. Needles used for injection purposes for TB, Insulin, or Intramuscular are also low risk.
Here is the first thing you should do after sustaining an exposure:
First aid after sustaining any exposure: Cleanse skin immediately with antibacterial soap or Chlorhexidine. For eyes, rinse with water for at least 5 minutes. (see UCDHS Policy and Procedure # 2167).
Blood/Body Fluid Exposure (Needlesticks)Policy & Procedures (intranet)
Report exposure to the Bloodborne Surveillance Nurse located in Employee Health Services at (916) 734-7585.
Fill out specific report for sharps or blood/body fluid exposure on-line by clicking on the Employee Exposure (EE) icon on your desktop. If you were injured with a clean needle, please complete the Injury and Illness Worksheet .
If the on-line exposure does not print out a lab slip for the source patient, call (916) 734-7585 and the lab slip can be downloaded and faxed to you. You may need to re-enter the exposure on a different computer.
For any positive HIV exposure during Employee Health Services clinic hours, page (916) 816-3081. After 4 p.m., weekends or Holidays have the hospital operator call the ID Fellow on call. They will go over the exposure with you.
Drug therapy for an HIV exposure is available 24 hours a day in the main hospital. If a three day course of drug therapy is started, please notify Employee Health Services at (916) 734-7585 that treatment was started and leave information regarding your exposure. This will ensure that further contact can be established with a follow up plan for you.
For an example to hepatitis C, please come to Employee Health Services on next operational clinic day, so you can be followed with serial lab draws. There are no recommendations by CDC for prophylaxis after a hepatitis C exposure.
All exposures are offered lab draws over six months. If your source patient, to whom you were exposed to, had a duel disease, i.e., HIV and hepatitis C, you will be followed for one year.
For further information, please call the Bloodborne Pathogen Surveillance Nurse at (916) 734-7585.
Pre-hospital bloodborne pathogen exposures
Do not report any exposures on-line for this group. On line reporting is for employees only.
Exposure forms are to be filled out for particular groups, i.e. paramedics, fire fighters, police and bystanders. These reports are to be sent to prehospital coordinator.
The drop off box is located in the ED.
Sharps Safety Exception Letter
The Sharps Safety Exception Letter is used when requesting an exception to the use of a safety sharp product and is used when requesting a non-safety needle. Please contact the Purchasing Department.
Employee Health Services post offer forms, All UC Davis Health System employees are required by Title 22 and JCHCO to have a health clearance before the start date of employment.

Post Offer Pre-Placement Health Screening Request Form |
TUBERCULOSIS HEALTH CLEARANCE REVIEW
Welcome new hire candidate. You have been referred to this website questionnaire as the start of the post offer pre-placement process. The purpose is to provide Employee Health Services (EHS) information in order to facilitate a health screening appointment. The TB history that you provide will determine the best screening that will be utilized during your post offer pre-placement health screening appointment. Based on the different types of screening that are currently utilized and the activities associated with TB screening, different days of the week are utilized. The information you provide will assist EHS in getting the best appointment to meet your needs.
Thank you for your prompt response to this questionnaire. The completion of this form is voluntary. However, it will assist EHS in scheduling an appointment. Please click on the following link to complete and submit the questionnaire. The submit button on the form sends the questionnaire to EHS only.
Health Clearance TB Review Form
Information:
It is the policy of UCDMC that all staff working at the medical center campus are screened for TB as a new hire candidate (post offer pre-placement) and annually. Screening may occur more often as may be necessary.
EHS utilizes two methods of screening. The PPD skin test is the primary screening. This screening test is used for the majority of individuals. When indicated, a quantiferon test will be utilized. A TB symptom interview accompanies all screening.
- Employee Health Services (EHS) follows all University of California Davis, Health System (UCDHS) Worker’s Compensation cases (except for employee’s who have pre-designated to Human Resources, in writing, an alternate Primary Treating Physician) for at least the first 30 days after an injury has been reported. EHS is open from 7AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. The Mercy Medical located on 3000 Q Street is our designated back up clinic that will see W/C injuries after 4 PM without an appointment. Our established contract with them is to treat you one time. All follow up appointments are done in at EHS. If seen at this clinic, you are required to call EHS to make a follow up appointment and bring a copy of the Med Status report given to you for your supervisors. After hours when EHS is closed our phone message (916 - 734 – 3572) will give hours of operation, phone number and address of the Mercy Medical. This clinic is open until 10 PM including weekends and holidays.
- UCDHS employees presenting to the ED triage station should only be seen for life, limb or organ threatening injuries. All other cases should be referred to the Med Clinic, or EHS, that or the following day. Information pertaining to the management of acute pain and strain injuries is available at our EHS website. http://staff.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu
- All Bloodborne Pathogen Exposures are treated at employee health. On – line reporting is the process to report an exposure. Employee Health Services web site will link you to the correct incident to complete. Refer to the “Blue” card given to you during your PE hire exam. This card is given to identified employees who are at risk of sustaining exposures and is to be worn behind ID badge at all times. Refer to Hospital Policy and Procedures # 2167.
- Employees with possible communicable rashes should be referred to their PCP’s or to EHS for evaluation. All staff with suspect rash or pink eye need to be taken off of work until they can bring a health clearance from their Primary Care Physician or employee health saying they are free of any communicable diseases. Employees with possible communicable conditions ARE NOT to be referred to the ED for evaluation. Refer to EHS Web site for “fact sheets” for several topics and useful information. All fact sheets can be printed from this site.
- Employees presenting with non-work related complaints should be directed to their own physicians. ED for possible life, limb or organ threatening conditions.
- Employees should go directly to ED for chest pain, severe fractures, deep lacerations, seizures, loss of consciousness, or any other condition that is life threatening, including limb or organ conditions.
