Nationa Cancer Survivors Week

UC Davis Cancer Center celebrates the 10.5 million Americans who have been diagnosed with cancer and are alive today, along with the contributions of their families, friends and health-care providers.

Events for the week

Tuesday, May 27:

Do you search the Internet for information about your cancer diagnosis and treatment options? Do the results sometimes confuse you? Or are you new to using the Internet for cancer-related information?

If any of the answers to these questions is "yes," then please join us for the Internet Class for Cancer Patients. Michael Hogarth, UC Davis associate professor and director of informatics, and Bruce Abbott, UC Davis outreach librarian, will teach you how to find and use reliable information about cancer in this free, hands-on workshop. This session will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in Room 2206 of the UC Davis Education Building, 4610 X St., Sacramento.

Survivors' Night Out for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Country Club Lanes, 2600 Watt Ave., Sacramento. Music will be provided by Broken Iris. Enjoy an evening of food, bowling and networking with other survivors.

Wednesday, May 28:

Learn to relax and let go of stress using techniques of yoga and the martial art of aikido. These principles provide a systematic practice of relaxation and stress relief, creating a positive environment for the healing process and opportunities to release stored stress in the body and mind. As a result, you'll learn a natural state of relaxation along with positive ways to resolve difficulties and accept life's challenges. Cancer survivors, family members and caregivers are all welcome to attend. The practices presented are beneficial for everyone. The workshop will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the breakout rooms on the first floor of UC Davis Cancer Center, 4501 X St., Sacramento.

Saturday, May 31:

Survivors Picnic. Join us in celebrating survivors with a barbecue lunch, exhibit of art by cancer survivors, special presentations, activities for children, informational booths and community exhibits. The picnic will take place in front of UC Davis Cancer Center, 4501 X St., Sacramento from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Outback Steakhouse to the first 250 registered participants.
