Food and Nutrition Services provides high quality nutrition and healthcare services to meet the needs of our patients, guests, staff and our community. We invite you to learn more about our many services and the pride with which we offer them.

The Food and Nutrition Services Department is committed to excellent patient service, providing more than 700,000 meals per year to patients within the UC Davis Health System.  Our teams of Dietetic Assistants call or visit daily to get patient meal selections from over 40 different menu types. Patient satisfaction surveys helps to drive our regular menu updates, along with ongoing taste-testing for recipe improvement.

In a 2010 observational study analyzing the appropriateness of food environments at 14 major children’s hospitals throughout California, UC Davis Children’s Hospital scored the highest for healthy food options and positive messaging.

Patients, staff and the public can enjoy freshly prepared meals at any one of our four dining locations on the UC Davis Health System campus. Visit our Café Dining page for locations, hours and daily menu selections.

Our Pavilion Café is the main cafeteria located in the first floor lobby of the UC Davis Medical Center. This state-of-the-are facility is organized in “food-court” style with specialty areas including an open-hearth pizza oven, rotisserie station, wok station, deli counter and more. The cafeteria, which was updated and expanded in 2010, serves approximately 1.4 million meals per year. The cafeteria dining room is spacious and includes an outdoor patio that seats 150 guests.

All our cafeterias now use a waste diversion program with earth-friendly bioware and waste bins for recyclables and compostables. A “pulper” system removes liquid from refuse, reducing waste volume by 70 to 80 percent. Please support our programs by looking at posted signs and throwing your trash into the correct bins.

We are proud to offer high-quality, clinical nutrition care to patients within the UC Davis Health System and the Sacramento Valley region. Our team of over 30 registered dietitians coordinates medical nutrition therapy for all hospital floors and intensive care units (ICU) within the UC Davis Medical Center, as well as specialty outpatient clinics, and UC Davis Medical Group primary care physician offices located throughout the region. Put together, UC Davis Health System has more specialty registered dietitians than any other in the region.

Though in a variety of locations, our team’s consistent goal is to support our patients with optimal nutrition during recovery and illness, and to provide nutrition counseling and education for disease management and prevention.

In addition to providing individualized nutrition services to patients, UC Davis Health System’s registered dietitians offer nutrition education to members of the community by participation in a variety of outreach programs including health fairs, school career days and serving as guest speakers for community groups.

UC Davis Health System offers a post-baccalaureate Dietetic Internship Program for those interested in pursuing careers as registered dietitians.  The fifty-week program offers experience in all three areas of dietetics: clinical, community, and food service. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and accepts six interns each year.
