Family Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Program

Student Competencies

Upon completion of the Program, the graduate will be competent in:

  1. Gathering a complete health database from the patient by obtaining a thorough health history, including the psychosocial aspects of the patient's life.
  2. Performing a thorough, accurate physical examination.
  3. Developing a plan for each patient problem and involving the the patient in the formation of the plan. These plans include appropriate studies, therapy, specific patient education with appropriate physician consultation and the use of protocols as indicated.
  4. Effective communication with patients and members of the health care team.
  5. Promoting patient education in disease prevention, health promotion, stress reduction, and life crises, etc. including family involvement.
  6. Appropriately evaluating and treating common emergency situations, performing minor surgery, and splinting or casting non-displaced fractures.
  7. Maintaining thorough, orderly and legible medical records including problem lists, medication lists, and flow sheets.
  8. Treating patients in satellite clinics with physician consultation by electronic means.
  9. Providing health care jointly with physicians, to patients in a variety of settings.
  10. Providing pre-operative and post-operative care to surgical patients.
  11. Assessing the family as a system; identifying individuals' methods of interactions and developmental stages; identifying a family problem list, and creating a plan with the family to address the issues on that problem list.
  12. Utilizing the strengths of the family to promote health, wellness and preventive measures and for support during illness for the family members.
  13. Demonstrating professionalism in all settings.
  14. Compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
