Technical standards for Family Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants
All critical skills necessary to practice medicine as a Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant effectively and safely are incorporated into the Program curriculum. Published requirements to complete the program reflect those clinical skills. The student has to meet all graduation requirements to be eligible for a certificate. To be successful in the program, the student must:
- Maintain a grade point average of C (2.0 GPA) in all courses and pass every Program graded component.
- Demonstrate minimal competence in all major course objectives which include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Utilizing appropriate oral and written communication;
- Establishing and maintaining appropriate relationships with patients, families, and other health care professionals conducive to providing quality medical care and services;
- Performing problem focused assessments with an appropriate exam and utilization of diagnostics and arriving at evidence based treatment;
- Performing a comprehensive physical examination on patients in various settings, i.e., ER, hospital, clinic, etc.;
- Demonstrating ability to perform various office surgical procedures;
- Demonstrating ability to perform clinical skills such as suturing, cast application, CPR, starting IVs, and others;
- Demonstrating personal and professional qualities such as appropriate initiative, good judgment, flexibility, self confidence, resourcefulness, and tact;
- Demonstrating administrative skills including time management, appropriate utilization of supportive personnel and knowledge of reimbursement systems; and
- Demonstrating an ability to adapt rapidly and appropriately to new clinical settings.
- Adapt to all stresses of an intensive academic and clinical training program.
- Apply universal precautions when indicated.
- Demonstrate adequate clinical progress.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior in all roles and settings.
