Family Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Program

Education Requirements

The program does not have a minimum grade-point average (GPA) required for admission, however transcripts are thoroughly reviewed to assess the potential of the applicant's academic success and completion of the program.  A cumulative college GPA of less than 2.7 is not “competitive” in the program’s typical applicant pool.

Physician Assistant (PA) Certificate track

An associate degree or the equivalent (90 quarter units/60 semester units of college credit completed at an accredited college or university) is required prior to application. Coursework may be taken at an accredited community college; however, vocational, trade or technical school courses will not satisfy the program's educational course requirement.

Family Nurse Practitioner-MSN (FNP-MSN) track

In addition to fulfilling the same prerequisite education requirements listed under the Physician Assistant Program the applicant must have a bachelor's degree and be a registered nurse currently licensed in the State of California.

Since applicants to the FNP-MSN track are required to apply to CSUS, you must also:

  • have completed a statistics course within the past seven years
  • take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Your official GRE scores will be submitted to CSUS upon application to the CSUS Division of Nursing MSN Program. (UC Davis does not require a separate copy of the GRE scores.)

Applicants must apply to CSUS during our admissions cycle.  The application deadline for CSUS for summer 2008 is Dec. 1, 2007. For additional information regarding admission to CSUS, contact the CSUS Graduate Admissions Office at (916) 278-6470.

NOTE:  RNs who have become licensed by challenge mechanism rather than by completing an educational program to become an RN must complete all of the (eight) prerequisite courses at an accredited college/institution. For example, courses completed by means of examination (i.e., CLEP) or experiential learning must be repeated.
