Prerequisite courses
Beginning in June 2013, UC Davis will offer master’s degrees for aspiring nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Complete program information will be posted by April 17, 2013, when the 2013-2014 Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) opens. Interested applicants may review the information below to see how their qualifications match up with the admission requirements.
Physician assistant prerequisites
All prerequisites are required at the college level from an accredited school and must be completed at the time of the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants application:
1. Human Anatomy with lab—recommended within five years of application deadline*
2. Human Physiology with lab—recommended within five years of application deadline*
3. General Chemistry with lab
4. Microbiology or bacteriology with lab
5. Algebra, Calculus or Statistics
6. English Composition
7. Two courses in Social Sciences (e.g. Psychology, Sociology or Cultural Anthropology)
*Please note: Due to recent changes in the universities and community colleges, students re-taking classes may be unable to gain admission to the repeat courses. Due to this technicality, it is no longer required that applicants complete Human Anatomy and Human Physiology during the five years prior to applying. However, completing those courses within that timeframe is still highly recommended.
Nurses with more than five years direct patient care experience may meet the Human Anatomy and Human Physiology requirement by taking a combined Human Anatomy and Physiology (AP I & II with labs) refresher course as long as it is completed in consecutive sessions over one year at the same college.
