Family medicine enhanced obstetrics training program

We are delighted to offer this special training experience to a unique group of applicants. In order to process your application you must submit an ERAS application plus an additional 50 word statement about why you want to do this track, and select the "FM/OB Track" for UC Davis. Then, you will need to have interviews in both departments in order to be considered for a position.

Overview

A combined training opportunity in family medicine and obstetrics was started at UC Davis in June of 1997. The goal of the program is to provide a unique training experience to residents who are interested in becoming family physicians and have additional training in operative obstetrics.  A recent article published by our faculty in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine describes our Enhanced Obstetrics Track. Read the article here.

Objectives

The objective of the program is to provide residents with similar obstetrical training received by OB/GYN residents without the operative gynecology. Graduates of the four-year program will be board eligible in family medicine and will be able to obtain hospital credentialling for obstetrical surgery..

Program oversight

The combined program is a four-year experience coordinated jointly by the Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at UC Davis. Both are fully accredited residency programs. The combined program has been endorsed by the institutional graduate medical education committee, Dr. Tom Balsbaugh, of Family & Community Medicine and Dr. Mary Ciotti of Obstetrics & Gynecology function as co - directors. Dr. Suzanne Eidson-Ton, a graduate of the program, is the Assistant Residency Director for the program and functions as the advisor to our FM/OB residents

Curriculum

Conceptually, the curriculum of the combined program is best described as enhanced training in surgical obstetrics for family physicians. Before development of this program, it was common for graduates of family practice programs who had an interest in developing operative obstetrical skills to apply for a one - year "rural" or "maternal - child" fellowship. The combined program at UC Davis integrates operative obstetrics as part of the residents training over the entire four-year period, while completing family practice requirements within the first three years.
