Family Medicine / Obstetrics Residency Program

UC Davis began a four year combined residency training opportunity in Family Medicine and Obstetrics in June of 1997. This unique program provides residents with a strong foundation in family medicine and an advanced obstetrics experience over four years of training. There is one FM/OB PGY-1 position annually.

FM/OB residents complete all of the goals and objectives of the UC Davis Family Medicine Residency and also develop proficiency at providing obstetrical services including:

  • ob ultrasound
  • prenatal genetic testing and counseling
  • vaginal deliveries, including operative vaginal delivery (vacuum and forceps)
  • episiotomy and perineal repair
  • vaginal breech delivery
  • multiples
  • cesarean deliveries
  • anesthetic/analgesic procedures
  • immediate newborn care including resuscitation and circumcision
  • dilation and curettage and MVA procedures
  • prenatal care and antepartum care for high risk patients

Graduates of the FM/OB program will be board eligible in family medicine and will receive an additional certificate of completion for the FM/OB program.

A 2005 article published by our faculty in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine describes the program in more detail. Read the article here.

The FM/OB Program is coordinated jointly by the UC Davis Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Both are fully accredited residency programs.  Sarah Marshall MD is the FM/OB program director and works closely with with Kay Nelsen MD (Family Medicine Residency Program Director) and Clara Paik MD (Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Director).
