Welcome to the Department of Family and Community Medicine
The Department of Family and Community Medicine provides continuous,
comprehensive, compassionate and personal care for patients of both sexes and
all ages, within the context of family and community. As family physicians,
we are committed to fostering health and integrating health care services for
the whole person by humanizing medicine and providing scientific, evidence-based,
high quality care. We care for patients with acute and chronic problems, both
in a clinic setting or in the hospital, when needed. We also manage preventive
services for our patients, and can coordinate rehabilitative care and supportive
care.
Education
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is nationally-recognized for its
excellence and innovation in providing primary care educational opportunities for
medical students and family practice residents. The residency program based at
the UC Davis Medical Center has 42 residents and offers
residents great flexibility in tailoring their training experience to meet future
professional needs. The program also offers special dual training program
opportunities in psychiatry and obstetrics. In addition, the department sponsors
one of the premier training programs in the nation for family nurse practitioners
and physician assistants.
Research
In addition to providing clinical services and teaching responsibilities, family
medicine faculty members engage in a wide variety of research programs. Special
areas of emphasis in the department include health behavior change,
physician-patient communication, chronic illness care, women's health, and health
disparities (lessening disparities, role of culture in medicine, etc.)
