The mission of the University of California, Davis, Health System Eye Center is to provide the highest possible quality of patient care, to conduct pioneering research on the visual system and its disorders, and to train residents, medical students, practicing physicians, allied health personnel, and fellows for outstanding careers in either academic or clinical practice. We welcome gifts that support this mission. Patient Care: Since its inauguration as the UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology in 1968, the Eye Center’s first and foremost priority has always been to provide excellent patient care. In response to our dedication to patients, patient numbers have grown dramatically in recent years, and over 52,000 patients are projected be seen in 2008. Research: The unusually collaborative research structure in place at UC Davis allows the Eye Center to draw on the many excellent minds available in widely diverse university departments. Teaching and Training: The body of knowledge and technical demands for today’s practitioners have dramatically increased in recent years, and the Eye Center’s commitment to excellence in teaching and training is paramount. Although concentrated in the UC Davis general service region, our UC Davis-trained ophthalmologists practice across the United States and in many foreign countries. With Federal Government research funding levels static or declining, clinic costs escalating beyond current reimbursement levels, and less than 6% of total Eye Center revenues coming from State of California sources, Eye Center advances in patient care, research and training will become increasingly dependent on the generosity of our donors.
