The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine sponsors a three year residency training program in emergency medicine. Our program trains 12 residents per year (a total of 36 residents) to become experts in the independent practice of emergency medicine.  With an outstanding faculty and exciting training curriculum, graduates are well prepared to be leaders in our field.

The UC Davis emergency department, is one of the nation's highest-acuity and the area's most technologically-advanced emergency departments, making it an ideal training ground for both students and residents.

Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship

The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine offers a two-year Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship. The program combines training in clinical emergency medicine research with graduate level training at UC Davis leading to either a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology or Masters in Public Health.

The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine maintains a strong commitment to clinical research in Emergency Medicine. The Department has a broad area of research interests and expertise and participates in several multi-departmental collaborations. Areas of focused research include but are not limited to clinical emergency cardiology, trauma evaluation and management, injury prevention, pediatric emergency medicine, industry sponsored trials, development and validation of clinical decision rules, infectious disease, ultrasonography, disaster preparedness, and ED overcrowding and surge management.

In addition, UC Davis is a leading center in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), the first federally funded research network in pediatric emergency medicine.

Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship

The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one or two year Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship. Fellows spend significant amount of time performing, reviewing and supervising emergency ultrasound examinations.  They will be an integral part of the Departmental Ultrasound Quality Improvement review process.  Fellows will participate in resident ultrasound training as well a medical student ultrasound education.  Fellows will have significant scanning time and time to perform research, if interested.  Fellows will be eligible to sit for the RDMS exam during their fellowship. Fellows will develop skills in ultrasound program administration, ultrasound education and training, quality improvement, and advanced ultrasound applications.

Emergency Medicine Toxicology Fellowship

The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine offers a two year Medical Toxicology Fellowship. This is an ACGME approved fellowship with 6 full-time faculty providing comprehensive training in clinical and medical toxicology with extensive opportunities for patient care, translational research, graduate education, and teaching. UC Davis is a division of the California Poison Control System; an integrated system receiving over 300,000 calls/year. Fellows will be actively involved with a busy inpatient consultation system. 

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers several elective rotations for medical students in order to provide emergency medicine experience in both clinical and research areas. Starting as MS1s, students can participate in emergency care with the EMR 401 preceptorship. During the MS4 year, several electives are offered to provide students with basic emergency medicine knowledge and continued exposure to the care of emergency patients.

These electives are some of the most popular fourth-year courses, and most students feel that they gained a unique knowledge base during their emergency medicine rotations. Students work side-by-side with emergency medicine residents and are supervised directly by emergency medicine faculty, with significant time spent on bedside teaching and personalized interaction.

The Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program (EMRAP) provides the undergraduate aspiring to a career in health care with experience in the place where acute medical care begins, the emergency department. The UC Davis Medical Center, a 577-bed hospital, is the major teaching affiliate for the UC Davis School of Medicine.

The UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine is recruiting college students to participate in our research efforts investigating clinical questions in this demanding setting. The research program in emergency medicine at UC Davis Health System is very active. Projects have been accomplished and are ongoing in a broad spectrum of clinical issues in the emergency department. Some areas of interest include: 1) injury control, 2) strategic clinical decision making, 3) cost effective emergency care, 4) trauma, 5) asthma, 6) identification of heart attacks, and 7) domestic violence.

In addition to numerous regional and national educational programs given by individual faculty members, the department sponsors three emergency medicine continuing medical education programs. These include a week-long winter conference at Lake Tahoe and a four-day summer conference in Hawaii.

The Ultrasound guided central venous cannulation tutorial is a Web-based learning tool that illustrates the proper technique and practical use of ultrasound for central venous cannulation. The tutorial was developed by Dr. Rose and Dr. Bair along with Dr. Soria. It covers both the proper technique of ultrasound use with central venous cannulation, as well as the potential pitfalls.
