Dr. Ton is the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity, and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.  He serves as the Director of Education at the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities where he authored a training program to teach health care leaders how to make culturally and linguistically appropriate system changes at academic, county, and state health organizations. He is also the founding medical director of the Transcultural Wellness Center of Asian Pacific Community Counseling; a community clinic that specializes in serving the mental health needs of Sacramento’s diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

Dr. Ton received the UC Davis Chancellor’s Achievement Award for Diversity and Community in 2005; the 2007 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Community Engagement for his work with communities, ethnic minorities, and cultural competence; and the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2016.

Dr. Ton has presented nationally on the topics of cultural competence, education, and system change and regularly receives teaching, leadership, and community awards for his work with health care professionals and underserved communities. His areas of interests include diversity and inclusion, professionalism, cultural psychiatry, humanistic psychology, medical student education, and faculty development.

Adrienne Lawson-Thompson serves as the Director for Institutional Culture/Climate and Community Engagement at the Office for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion with University of California Davis Health. Adrienne’s primary responsibilities include: climate needs assessment and reporting; professional leadership development; continuous diversity improvement; marketing of the office of equity, diversity and inclusion; and community engagement.

Adrienne has a doctorate in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies. Her research interest is broad in scope which includes: equity, climate and culture change in organizations, women faculty leadership and retention, cultural and language diversity;  gender differences, role-modeling and mentorship, faculty, and staff diversity and inclusion. 

Adrienne was the former Diversity Manager for Faculty Recruitment and Retention at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. She also held an adjunct faculty position with Sacramento State and Argosy University. Her hobbies include: mental, physical and spiritual health, reading, and traveling.

Mercedes Piedra, M.S., serves as the Director of Multicultural Education at the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OEDI) at University of California Davis Health Sacramento Campus.  Mercedes is responsible for developing, implementing, managing, and monitoring diversity and inclusion training within UC Davis Health, identifying all educational resources within UC Davis Health/UC Davis pertaining to equity, diversity and inclusion education. She is the Program Manager of the new TPMG-UC Davis Health Physician Pipeline Initiative, an educational pipeline initiative that will help build the next generation of physicians to advance Latino health.

Mercedes has her Masters of Science Degree in Counseling Education focusing on workforce development and organizational management from Sacramento State University.  She’s championed nationally recognized academic and research programs to increase underrepresented students, staff and faculty at all levels of California’s Higher Education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.  Mercedes has held career positions as program coordinator, counselor and faculty member advocating cultural competence and inclusion to create intuitional excellence by enhancing the diversity of its workforce.  Her hobbies include road cycling and music.

Marian Brotzman has been with UC Davis Health since October 2011, and currently provides administrative support to the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor at the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UC Davis Health. Prior to joining the OEDI office, she worked in the School of Medicine VC/Dean’s Office as receptionist and back up executive assistant for the Executive Leadership Team. Previously, Marian worked for Seagate Technology located in Scotts Valley, CA, for 11 years in various capacities, the latter 4 years as an executive administrative assistant. Her hobbies include reading, and is a fitness enthusiast.
