Faculty research interests
Daniel Eisen, M.D.
Dr. Eisen is a board-certified dermatologist and a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. He received specialized training in Mohs Surgery and Cosmetic Procedures during his fellowship with Drs. Lawrence Warshawski and David Zloty at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. His medical interests include melasma, hidradenitis suppurativa, common and rare types of skin cancers, Morgellons disease, venous disorders, and delusions of parasitosis. Dr. Eisen has expertise in the following procedures: Mohs surgery, photodynamic therapy, cutaneous reconstructive surgery, laser surgery, sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, cutaneous fillers, such as restylane or juvederm, dermabrasion, and Botox. Dr. Eisen has performed thousands of cosmetic procedures and has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international dermatology meetings.
Nasim Fazel, M.D., D.D.S.
Nasim Fazel, M.D., D.D.S., assistant clinical professor in the Department of Dermatology, is a board-certified dermatologist and dentist. In addition to general dermatology, Dr. Fazel has a special interest in the medical management of oral mucous membrane disease and soft tissue pathology. Her background in dentistry provides for insight into the pathophysiology and treatment of aphthous ulcers, burning mouth syndrome, oral lichen planus, and oral vesiculobullous disease (e.g. pemphigus and pemphigoid). Dr. Fazel is regarded as a leading expert in the field of Oral Medicine by many colleagues who refer these difficult and challenging conditions to her.
Maxwell Fung, M.D.
Dr. Fung wears two patient care hats: one as a dermatologist who sees patients in the clinic, and the other as a pathologist who interprets skin biopsy specimens. His clinical interests include the evaluation and management of stubborn itchy rashes that elude conventional classification or response to conventional therapy such as "itchy red bump" disease. He also evaluates and manages cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders such as mycosis fungoides and lymphomatoid papulosis. His research activities include clinical-pathologic correlation of inflammatory skin disorders, as well as diagnosis and management of atypical moles (dysplastic nevi) and cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders.
Rivkah Isseroff, M.D.
In addition to general dermatology, Dr. Isseroff has a strong clinical interest in wound care. She is currently the director of the ulcer clinic at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Mather. Her research interests include keratinocyte differentiation, migration and wound healing, signal transduction, bioengineered tissue replacement, and toxicology of the skin. Current research projects focus on analysis of cell responses to an applied electric field, bioengineered skin grafts, and enhancers of would healing.
Philina Lamb, M.D.
Dr. Lamb completed her internship and dermatology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She was a clinical investigator in a Phase III study involving atopic dermatitis, and a co-investigator in a study of the use of wireless Palm technology. She also has completed an immunodermatology research fellowship.
Chai Sue Lee, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Lee is the Director of the Psoriasis Treatment Center and the Phototherapy Unit in the dermatology department. She sees herself as a patient advocate, especially for those with psoriasis. She has treated thousands of patients with psoriasis using the latest topical and systemic therapies. Dr. Lee completed a fellowship in psoriasis treatment, phototherapy, and clinical research at UCSF in 2001. The Psoriasis Treatment Center was developed by Dr. Lee to help patients and physicians better understand psoriasis and expedite effective, individualized treatments.
Fu-Tong Liu, M.D., Ph.D.
The Chair of the department, Dr. Fu-Tong Liu, is internationally known for being a pioneer and leading investigator in the studies of the galectin family members, which play key roles in many physiological and pathological processes. Under Dr. Liu's leadership the department has grown rapidly in size and prestige and has ranked tenth among all dermatology departments in the country in terms of total NIH grant awards. Prior to coming to UC Davis, Dr. Liu was the head of the Division of Allergy at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. His current research is focused on the role of galectins in allergic inflammation, innate immunity, cancer progression, and wound healing. His research group also studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of allergic skin inflammation.
Emanual Maverakis, M.D.
Dr. Emanual Maverakis is an Assistant Professor with appointments in the departments of Dermatology and Medical Microbiology and Immunology at UC Davis. Dr. Maverakis became interested in immunology as an undergraduate at the University of California Los Angeles where he earned departmental honors and graduated with a B.S. Summa Cum Laude. He then continued his research endeavors at Harvard Medical School, where he was a fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. After earning an M.D. Summa Cum Laude from Harvard he completed an internship in internal medicine at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and then a residency in dermatology at UC Davis.
Dr. Maverakis’ group has a wide variety of interests including: immunotherapies for melanoma, T cell mediated skin diseases, and the murine models of autoimmunity. Dr. Maverakis is funded by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His recent publications have appeared in journals such as: The Journal of Experimental Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Clinically, Dr. Maverakis specializes in the treatment of patients with severe immune-mediated systemic diseases involving the skin.
