Early Identification and Intervention

  • Training for health professionals in screening, assessment and treatment

Robin Hansen, MD, Randi Hagerman, MD, and other faculty provide trainings for pediatricians and other health professionals in best practices in screening, referral and treatment of children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Hansen is also working with the California Medical Association, the California Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and legislative staff to promote legislation to establish an autism pilot program to identify best practices in screening and to integrate the services and supports provided to children with ASD through the regional centers and local educational agencies.

  • Continuing education and networking opportunities for the community of early intervention practitioners

The Community of Early Intervention Practitioners is a collaborative project of Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD), the Infant Development Association (IDA), and the California Association of Professors of Early Childhood Special Education (CAPESCE), with CEDD faculty Gina Guarneri, MA, and Maurine Ballard-Rosa, PhD, taking the lead.  Videostreaming and blogging technology are being utilized to develop an interactive, support community of practitioners and families.

  • Partnering with state agencies and advocacy groups to support quality early childhood special education programs

The California Training and Technical Assistance Committee (TTAC), led by the Department of Developmental Services and including staff from the Departments of Education, Mental Health, and Social Services, plans and coordinates inservice training activities for early intervention program administrators, professionals, and paraprofessionals.  CEDD faculty participate in TTAC.  CEDD faculty have been active in coordinating work on new or revised personnel standards for early intervention, early childhood special education, and infant/early childhood/family mental health, and in other TTAC projects.

  • Triumph Preschool

CEDD faculty are working with Triumph Preschool staff to develop a high quality, inclusive, early childhood program, with the goal of establishing opportunities for interdisciplinary training and research with CEDD partners as well as a quality preschool experience for children and families.
