  • Coordinate sample distribution, storage and performance of specialized core assays
  • Provide facilities and expert personnel for studies on nutrition and metabolism, cardiovascular research, cancer and neuroscience research

Functions

Specimen Processing
The Core Laboratory can perform minimal to complex specimen processing. Among its services are:
- SOP’s for specimen processing are written to ensure that all specimens are collected and processed in accordance
with the approved instructions specific for each protocol
- Single or multiple blood, serum, plasma or urine aliquots
- Customized laser-printed labels specific for each protocol can be generated in-house
- Access to two refrigerated centrifuges
- Glucometer
- Pregnancy testing

Clinical Analysis
UCDHS Clinical Pathology Services is designated as the primary laboratory for routine analysis for the GCRC.  All the required forms (for establishing a research account with UCDMC Pathology) will be provided at the initiation meeting or can be obtained from the Laboratory Director.

The VAMC Clinical Lab will assist the GCRC in situations that require STAT lab results.

Specimen Storage
The Core Laboratory has access to a 4°C refrigerator, one upright –20°C and three -80°C freezers for short term specimen storage.  All refrigerators and freezers are monitored daily for efficient and accurate temperature control.

Specimen Shipping
The PI and/or research staff are responsible for shipping specimens.  Federal Express does a daily pick up at the VAMC.  GCRC nursing staff can direct research staff to the pick up location.

Research Staff are permitted to transport specimens off the VAMC property if they are certified to do so.  Copies of certifications should be given to the Nurse Manager.

Medical Courier Incorporated provides transportation of laboratory samples between the CCRC and labs off of the VAMC property (such as UCDMC Pathology) as necessary.

Specialized Analyses:
The laboratory personnel can help with isolation of cells from peripheral blood, flow cytometry as well as isolation of DNA/RNA and other esoteric testing as necessary for the different protocols and researchers can approach the Lab Director with their needs and submit and Application for CCRC form for approval.

Multiplexing on the Bioplex and BD FACS Array:
2 different platforms are available for multiplexing and in combination provide a variety of tests that can be multiplexed according to the needs of a particular protocol (Click here for list of assays available).
