Workplace violence/assaultive behavior
In the event of threat or actual violence involving staff, patients, or visitors, the following guidelines should be followed:
- Always attempt to de-escalate the situation whenever possible. Frequently, patients and visitors may verbalize frustration due to lack of control. By attempting to identify the problem and assisting with a solution, potentially volatile situations can be avoided.
- In the event of actual violence between patients and visitors or patients, visitors and staff, UC Davis Police should be called immediately, utilizing the internal 9-1-1 number.
- In the event of violence among staff, the Reportable Violence Against Hospital Personnel form should be filled out. These can be found in all Patient Care Services Areas.
