California State University/Sacramento scholarships

The following is a list of scholarships offered by California State University, Sacramento which may be interest to nursing students, along with a short description of the qualifications necessary to apply. This information can also be found on the CSUS Health Department Web site.

Institutional scholarships

(applications available January 15; deadline March 15)

Judith Ann Hakari Nursing Scholarship. Must be upper division Nursing student and Sacramento high school graduate.

Helen Harder Memorial Scholarship. Applicant must be accepted into clinical Nursing program, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.

The Vera Koehler Clinical Nursing Scholarship. Applicant must be accepted into clinical Nursing program, have at least a 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need and community service background.

Latin American Nurses Organization Scholarship. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, major in Nursing, and demonstrate financial need. Preference given to Hispanic students.

Geraldine T. Olson Nursing Scholarship. Applicant must be enrolled at least 6 credit hours within the Division of Nursing. Must have at least 2.5 GPA and financial need.

Anna M. Steffen Nursing Alumni Scholarship. Applicant must be a Nursing student entering fourth semester of the Nursing program and have at least a 3.3 GPA.

John and Lillian Swacina Scholarship. Applicant must be a full time Nursing major with at least a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need.  Visit the CSUS financial aid office to pick up a packet for any of these scholarships. Included must be a GPA verification form. You will be required to write a brief statement of why the award should be offered to you.

CSUS nursing division scholarships

Golden West Orthopedic Group/Dottie Mersen Award. Must be an RN, preferably an orthopedic RN, have completed 25 Nursing units with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Mary Lucas Nursing Scholarship Fund. Presently, this fund is inactive. Contact the Nursing Division for further information regarding any updates.

Severely Disadvantaged Students (SDS) Scholarship. Applicant must have at least a 2.0 GPA, be enrolled in the Nursing program for 12 units per semester, have received 2 or more total bonus points on the Nursing program application form in the areas of educational/economic or environmental background, and demonstrate financial need. Scholarships created to assist minorities

The Sacramento Black Nurses Association Scholarship. Applicant must be enrolled in a Nursing program and be willing to write a 500 word essay on a specific topic. An interview is required. Forms are available for distribution through the Nursing Division or by contacting: SBNA Scholarship Committee P.O. Box 5171 Sacramento, CA 95817

Minority Health Professional Scholarship. Applicant must be enrolled in a Nursing program and willing to "repay" the scholarship by working in a medically under-served area for two years. Don't panic, "repayment" can mean working in the area you live in. Examples of underserved areas include Placer county, Vacaville, North Sacramento, and areas of Yolo county. Also any county hospital in California is considered underserved, including San Francisco General, Highland, or Children's Hospital of Oakland). Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship. Applicant must be of Japanese descent, a California resident, and have a community service background. For more information contact: The Japanese-American Citizen's League 1765 Sutter St.. San Francisco, CA 94115 Tel: (415) 921-5225

Asian/Pacific American Studies Scholarship. Applicant must be a full time student, demonstrate academic achievement and Asian American community service. Applications can be obtained at the Ethnic Studies Office on the CSUS campus, Psychology building, room 563A.

Ghazi Karadsheh for Excellence. Applicant must be at least a sophomore with a 2.5 GPA or better, must demonstrate financial need, and be of Arab origin. Contact the financial aid office at CSUS for more information.

Anthony J. Leones Scholarship. Applicant must be a first time freshman or transfer student with at least a 2.5 GPA, and must be of ethnic background. Contact the CSUS University Outreach office on campus for an application. For more information about scholarships, call (916) 278-6179.
