This course will address current methods of achieving pain management in the care of adult patients. Areas to be addressed include characteristics of pain, analgesics and dose ranges, patient advocacy, policy review and patient education. Epidural analgesia standards of practice will be covered, including patient assessment, documentation, and epidural pump use. Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) standards of practice will be covered, including patient assessment, documentation, and PCA pump use. Issues regarding pain management in special populations, such as neurologically impaired, substance abuse and palliative pain control, will be discussed. Appropriate selection, application, and documentation of pain assessment tools will be reviewed.
