Course # 06861
Class dates in red are full.
This course is for health-care providers who either direct or participate in any aspect of patient care during neonatal resuscitations. Participants must be currently working in the field of neonatal care to attend. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovasculer Care of the Neonate. The NRP course format requires learners to study the material from the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 6th Edition, and take an online examination before attending the NRP course. Learners attend an interactive course that includes little or no lecture about textbook contents, uses course time for skills stations and supervised practice, and uses simulation and debriefing as an important part of the learning experience. Candidates must be health-care providers (medical, nursing, paramedical allied health professionals) whose daily occupations demand proficiency in neonatal delivery room resuscitation.
Prior to the course, participants must read the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 6th Edition and pass the NRP online examination, for lessons 1 through 9. A loaner manual, The AAP/AHA 2011 Sixth Edition Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Manual for UC Davis Health System staff may be picked up at our office, approximately one month prior to the class with a $60 deposit. Loaner manuals must be returned in good condition the day of the course. Participants are responsible for the $60 cost of the manual if it is not returned or is damaged.
Community participants must purchase their own books and online examination per AHA policy. Manuals are available for purchase at the UC Davis Sacramento Store, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Amazon.
Bring your online examination verification to the NRP course. The online examination will be assigned to UC Davis staff through their UC Learning Center account. Community participants may complete the NRP online examination through the AAP. Upon registration, detailed directions to access the NRP online examination will be sent to course participants.
The NRP online exmaination must be taken no more than 30 days prior to course date. Participants must finish testing within 14 days of their original start date of the online exam. If the online exam is completed more than 30 days before course date, the examination is invalid and course participant must pay to take it again.
Prerequisites and preparation
The following must be completed to prepare for the course:
- Must be a licensed health-care professional who currently participates in patient care during neonatal resuscitations.
- Review lessons 1-9 in your textbook
- Review and understand the information on the student DVD.
- Complete the lesson review questions for lessons 1-9 and turn in pre-study packet day of course
- Take and pass the online examination no more then 30 days prior to course. Bring the certificate of completion the day of course.
Students who have not completed and passed the online examination will be rescheduled into another class.
Be courteous and on time. It is disruptive to other students and instructors and difficult for late students to catch up once the class starts. Students are expected to attend and participate in the entire course. You will not be allowed to attend the class if you are 20 minutes or later.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing or scrubs. You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands, bending, standing, and lifting. If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, please notify us prior to the course. The instructor will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course completion requirements.
