Mechanical Ventilation Principles and Patient Management

The science and clinical application of mechanical ventilation is broad and complicated. Through lecture, discussion, and hands-on simulation, this course will present current concepts of mechanical ventilation, including ventilator modes and settings, potential hazards, and alternative modes of ventilation. Types of respiratory failure and their management using mechanical ventilation will be discussed. Standards of caring for patients on ventilators and having artificial airways will be reviewed. Furthermore, weaning and liberation from mechanical ventilation be reviewed. Practice assessing and managing patients on mechanical ventilation will be provided using scenarios and a human patient simulator.
This course is intended for acute care and critical care nurses who work with mechanically ventilated patients on a daily basis.
Please dress in hospital scrubs or clinical work attire and bring a stethoscope as participants will work hands-on with a human patient simulator.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 26, for 7.5 contact hours.
The University of California, Davis Medical Center is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Attendees will not receive C.E. credit if they are more than 20 minutes late; no partial credit can be awarded.
