Managing Diabetes with Insulin in the Acute Care Setting
This course will provide nurses with current knowledge and strategies for using insulin in the management of diabetic patients. The course will review the pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and discuss the importance of managing blood glucose levels in the hospitalized patient. Initiating insulin therapy, adjusting insulin (ISS, correction doses, insulin pumps), carbohydrate counting and insulin sensitivity will be covered. Case studies regarding initiating insulin therapy, adjusting insulin therapy and initiating and titrating IV insulin utilizing hospital insulin protocols will be discussed.
