Infection Prevention Update
2014 / 2015
|October 17||March 20|
8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Glassrock Building auditorium (Room 7106)
Course # 08267
Topics of discussion will include:
- Prevention of Surgical Site Infections (SSI) – Content will include describing the epidemiology of SSIs, describing the core and supplemental strategies for SSI prevention, signs and symptoms of SSI, and a brief description of SSI surveillance and interpretation of infection rates.
- Clostridium difficile (C diff) - C. diff spores leave the body through an infected person's diarrhea. The spores can then contaminate surroundings. The spores can also be spread through the air (during bed-making for example). The spores are able to survive for a long time outside of the body unless they are destroyed through very thorough cleaning.
- Principles of Isolation – Lecture will cover the concept of isolation precaution and a historical review. Isolation practices for infection control will cover triage of patients, early detection, transporting patients, and communication.
- Impact of the Hospital Environment on our Patients – Topics covered will include environmental hygiene, construction and renovation in a health care facility, seasonal diseases and recommended vaccines, impact and risks of Legionella exposure.
