A ribbon-cutting ceremony held Saturday, July 10, celebrated UC Davis Medical Center's new Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion. The new facility is nearing completion, and the transition, including staff training in the building and the final move of equipment, will be phased in from August through October.
"UC Davis Medical Center has long focused on treating patients with the most complex and urgent illnesses and injuries — but we have been limited by our facilities. The opening of the Pavilion marks a new era in meeting our community's trauma and surgical needs," said Ann Madden Rice, CEO of UC Davis Medical Center.
U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsui was among the speakers at the event, which also featured comments by UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi and UC Davis Health System CEO Claire Pomeroy.
Other attendees included major donors to the Pavilion, such as UC Davis orthopaedics Professor Emeritus Michael Chapman. The Pavilion includes the Michael W. Chapman Emergency and Trauma Center, named in his honor. Other donors are representatives of the Firefighters Burn Institute, whose contributions led to renaming of the UC Davis Regional Burn Center to the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center.
Under construction for the past eight years, the Pavilion is a historic addition to UC Davis Medical Center, consisting of three above-ground stories, along with one below-grade floor to meet the community's need for expanded services.
