The publication's pediatrics rankings were published on its website and will appear in the Best Hospitals print guide, available on newsstands Aug. 30.
“This recognition is a testament to the quality and compassion of the UC Davis Children’s Hospital staff — the doctors, nurses, technicians and others who provide the very best care for children in the Sacramento region and beyond,” said Ann Madden Rice, chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center.
This year, U.S. News evaluated 170 pediatric centers and ranked 50 top children’s hospitals nationwide in 10 categories: cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, heart and heart surgery, kidney disorders, neonatology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology and urology. UC Davis Children’s Hospital is ranked 36th in pediatric urology.
“This honor recognizes the pediatric urology program's reputation for excellence in urogenital reconstructive surgery and our commitment to caring for children throughout Northern California and Nevada,” said Eric Kurzrock, associate professor and chief of pediatric urology. Kurzrock also is a member of the medical staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California.
Pediatric urologists care for infants and children with urogenital conditions. In addition to treating patients, Kurzrock is a surgeon-scientist who conducts research using human bladder stem cells to improve treatments for children with bladder disorders and adults with bladder cancer.
For the 2010-11 rankings, U.S. News requested data from 170 pediatric centers and used survey results from thousands of physicians in 10 pediatric specialties who were asked where they would refer the sickest patients. In all, 62 hospitals ranked in at least one specialty.
UC Davis Children's Hospital is the Sacramento region's only comprehensive hospital for children, serving infants, children, adolescents and young adults with primary, subspecialty and critical-care services. It includes the Central Valley's only pediatric emergency department and level I pediatric trauma center, which offers the highest level of care for critically ill children.
The 110-bed hospital includes a 49-bed, state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit and a 16-bed pediatric intensive care unit. With more than 120 physicians in 33 subspecialties, UC Davis Children's Hospital has more than 74,000 clinic and hospital visits and 13,000 emergency department visits each year.
