In collaboration with the medical centers at Stanford University and UC San Francisco, UC Davis Medical Center will present a day of activities for people with pulmonary fibrosis, their families and care givers. The seminar, “Understanding Pulmonary Fibrosis,” will include discussions of diagnostic criteria, management strategies, research initiatives and lung transplantation. The seminar will conclude with a question-and-answer session with pulmonary-care experts.

The seminar takes place Saturday, March 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio of the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis. The fee is $15, which includes lunch and all education materials. Medical oxygen tank refills will be provided at no additional cost.

Pulmonary fibrosis – also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis – is caused by ongoing scarring of the lungs due to chronic conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, inhaled contaminants, or exposures to certain chemicals or radiation. The disease is progressive and there is no cure, however immune-suppressive therapies can be helpful in relieving symptoms such as shortness of breath and coughing. Promising research initiatives under way at leading academic medical centers in Northern California are providing hope for improving outcomes for the quarter million people in the U.S. who are living with the disease.
