Lori Kennedy Madden, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, CNRN

Lori Madden has been a neuroscience nurse since she began work as a new graduate in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of California Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) in the early 1990's. She became a CN3 and with her continued thirst to learn more, she returned to school at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to study critical care and trauma. Lori followed her master's degree at UCSF in the first class of acute care nurse practitioner students in the Department of Physiological Nursing.

Lori practiced as an acute care nurse practitioner for 18 years at UCDMC in Neurological Surgery. Her interest in clinical research and identifying approaches to answer her own research questions prompted Dr. Madden's interest in pursuing a PhD. She was accepted into the inaugural cohort of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing in 2010. Lori was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award pre-doctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health.

She obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership from the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing in June 2014. Dr. Madden's research is focused on identification of features of body temperature in the acute period after moderate and severe TBI that influence neurologic outcome and validation of the IMPACT model for neurologic outcome prediction after TBI.

Lori has enjoyed teaching advanced practice nursing students as an Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing at UCSF. She is active in neuroscience nursing, contributing as a chapter editor and author in the AANN Core Curriculum for Neuroscience Nursing. She is currently co-chairperson for the interdisciplinary Neurocritical Care Society Guideline for Targeted Temperature Management, and serves on the NCS Guidelines Committee and Annual Meeting Planning Committee. Dr. Madden previously served as a trustee and president of the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing. Lori more recently was the president of the Agnes Marshall Walker Foundation, a charitable organization supporting neuroscience nursing through education, research, professional development, and certification. Currently, Dr. Madden serves as a member of the AANN Board of Directors.

In Fall 2015, she started working at UCSF in the Institute for Nursing Excellence as a Clinical Nurse Researcher. In this role, she enjoyed collaborating in variety of approaches to clinical inquiry and evidence-based practice with nurses in a range of clinical settings. Dr. Madden recently returned “home” to UC Davis, where she leads the Center for Nursing Science as a Clinical Nurse Scientist. She is excited to work with nurses to help them to learn about and perform research studies and evidence-based practice projects. Lori looks forward to highlighting the great work that UC Davis nurses are accomplishing and provide support for further inquiry and innovation.
