The UC Davis Medical Center Mentoring for Success Program
Purpose
- To support nurses and enhance transitions into specialty nursing areas for new graduate, transfer, and re-entry nurses.
- To increase the retention of UC Davis Medical Center nurses.
- To enhance nurse's cultural competence/ sensitivity.
- To support nurses desiring to obtain specialty certification by providing books and review materials for national examinations (an optional component).
Primary features
- Clinical mentoring for one year by an experienced RN at UC Davis Medical Center.
- Online education program
- Nurses select to complete any two of the available online modules (topics include palliative care, family violence/child abuse, working with patients with HIV illness, substance abuse, homelessness, or mental illness, and interacting in a culturally competent manner with underserved patients).
- Nurses select to receive either continuing education credit and/bachelor's level elective credit or master's level elective credit from California State University, Sacramento.
- Patient simulation training on how to manage crisis situations: two one-hour sessions per year.
- Mentee groups. Nurses attend any six one-hour group meetings with other mentees per year to discuss clinical challenges encountered in practice. Meetings are held Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- Mentor groups. Mentors attend any six one-hour meetings with other mentors per year to discuss methods of effective mentoring. Meetings are held Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- Evaluations. Mentees complete three one-hour online evaluations of the residency program per year.
