Dermatomes and Meshers: A Guide to Skin Grafting

A skin graft is a surgical procedure in which skin, either an allograft or autograft, is placed over a burn, non-healing wound, or trauma defect. A skin graft is used to permanently replace damaged or missing skin or to provide a temporary wound covering. This covering is necessary because the skin protects the body from fluid loss, helps with temperature regulation, and creates a barrier to disease-causing bacteria. Skin that is damaged by burns or non-healing wounds places patients at greater risk for infection and sepsis.
