Code Management in the Operating Room

This self-study module is designed to help provide competent nursing care in the event of a respiratory or cardiac arrest in the operating room. This module provides an overview of describing the appropriate actions and assessments prior to calling a code blue, how a code blue is initiated, responsibilities of the surgical team members, identifying the code sheet, where it is located and proper documentation.

By completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the appropriate actions and assessments prior to calling a code blue.
  2. State how a code blue is initiated.
  3. Identify the responsibilities of the surgical team members: anesthesia provider, senior member of anesthesia staff, surgeons, circulating nurse, scrub nurse, second RN, and hospital operating room assistant (HORA).
  4. Identify the code sheet, where it is located and proper documentation.

To complete this module, you must review the information, complete the post-test and print the certificate of completion for your records through HealthStream. Successful completion of this module requires a passing score of 80% or better on the exam. Upon completion of this course, the information will be entered into your education record.

To get started, log into HealthStream and click on Catalog. Once there you may search for Code Management or open the category view and click on Center for Nursing Education. Click on the self-study module and enroll in the course to begin the content.
