Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLA-BSI)
In August 2004, a multidisciplinary committee was formed to decrease the occurrence of Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLA-BSI). The committee utilized the BSI Prevention Bundle data developed by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement. The bundle approach has proven effective in the decrease/elimination of CLA-BSI in the adult population to decrease BSI.
The bundle consists of:
- Maximal barrier precautions during line insertion
- Hand hygiene
- Use of chloraprep
- Site placement - subclavian site preferred
- Daily review for the necessity of the line
The UC Davis Health System goal is to reduce CLA-BSI by consistent adherence to existing hospital policy for the insertion and maintenance of central venous catheters and ongoing monitoring for adherence to this policy.
In order to ensure consistent compliance with these components the following informational items and quizzes need to be read and completed through Healthstream starting Jan 8, 2008.
- Hand Hygiene
“Scrub the Hub” Hub Care
“Dress for Success” Central Line Dressing
“See the Site” Intravenous Catheter Site Care
“Necessary and Sufficient” Removing Central Venous Catheters
