Course description

This ACLS renewal course utilizes small group training using the Human Patient Simulator (HPS). The refresher course is designed for health-care providers who have previously taken ACLS and participate in the resuscitation of patients. In this course you will receive training in effective team behaviors and have the opportunity to practice as a team member and team leader. At the end of the course you will participate in a mega-code testing station. A simulated cardiac arrest scenario will test your knowledge of core case material and skills, knowledge of algorithms, understanding of arrhythmia interpretation and use of appropriate basic drug therapy. The small group setting enhances the simulation experience.

This course does not teach algorithms, ECG or pharmacology information. If you do not understand the ECG and pharmacology information in the pre-course assessment tests, it is unlikely that you can successfully complete the ACLS renewal course.

Course materials

A loaner text, AHA ACLS Provider Manual 2006, the 2006 Handbook of ECC and study packet for UC Davis Health System staff may be picked up at our office.  Books and study packets can be picked up approximately one month prior to class and no less than one week before class. Community participants must purchase their own books per AHA policy. Participants are responsible for reviewing materials prior to the class. Loaner texts must be returned in good condition the day of class. Participants are responsible for the cost of the text if it is not returned or returned in poor condition. Textbooks are available for purchase at the Center for Nursing Education, UC Davis Medical Center Bookstore or through the American Heart Association.
