         $150 for 12.0 credit hours
         $15 for each 1.0 credit hour

It is almost December 31, 2006. How do I get my certificate?

  • The requirement is for California physicians to complete 12-hours in pain management and the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients by December 31, 2006.
    California Assembly Bill 487 and the Medical Board of California, Business and Professions Code Section 2190.5
    "(a) All physicians and surgeons shall complete a mandatory continuing education course in the subjects of pain management and the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. For the purposes of this section, this course shall be a one-time requirement of 12 credit hours within the required minimum established by regulation, to be completed by December 31, 2006".
  • View or listen to "War on Pain" presentation(s)
  • You will need to fill out the registration, test and evaluation for each presentation.
  • *TIP  When a complete cover sheet  is faxed or mailed with test packet, only print first and last name on registration portion of test forms."Completed Date" will be date printed on certificate.  
  • Your certificate will be mailed within two weeks after we receive your payment and completed test(s).
  • This event is self recording. You will need to send a copy of your certificate and/or transcript to your Medical Board.

Do you need to take this course?

  • I am a California physician, active and living in California.
    Yes, California Assembly Bill 487 requires California physicians to obtain a minimum of 12-hours of Category 1 continuing medical education credit in pain management by December 31, 2006.
  • I am a retired California licensed physician living in California and want to keep my license active.
    Yes, if you want to keep your license active, you will need to take the 12-hours.
  • I live outside the state of California, but am licensed by the California Medical Board.
    You will need to contact the California Medical Board, (916) 263-2382 phone or (916) 263-2687 TDD.
  • Who is exempt?
    Contact the California Medical Board to confirm if you are exempt. California Assembly Bill 487 states: "By regulatory action, the board may exempt physicians and surgeons by practice status category from the requirement in subdivision (a) if the physician and surgeon does not engage in direct patient care, does not provide patient consultations, or does not reside in the State of California. (c) This section shall not apply to physicians and surgeons practicing in pathology or radiology specialty areas." 

Registration, tests and evaluations.

For CME credit, a registration, test and evaluation must be filled out for each presentation and mailed or faxed back to OCME. Use the cover sheet to confirm completed date for certificate and to save time filling out registration form(s).

    You will need to fill out the registration, test and evaluation for that presentation.
  • I'm taking 2 to 12 hours of credit.
    You will need to fill out the registration, test and evaluation for each presentation.
    *TIP   If you complete the registration cover sheet you will only need to print your first and last name on registration portion of test forms.
  • Do I need to fax or mail back the whole registration, test and evaluation to OCME?
    *TIP    You only need to fax or mail back the test portion of the forms.
  • Am I required to give my Social Security number?
    No, you are not required to give it. We mail out complementary annual transcripts each February. As an educational institution, our department enters all participants that attend our CME conferences, Grand Rounds and Online courses by their First Name + Last Name + last four digits of their Social Security number, thus ensuring better recording of participant's CME credit.
  • Will I get a grade on the test? No.

How do I take the "War on Pain" course?

There are two ways to take this course.

  • Online videos
  • Audio files

Online videos

How do I access the online videos?
  • After clicking "View video - click here to view" link, a new web page will open.
  • Click the "Play" button and the video will auto start.
  • The video will auto play and cannot go fast forward or reverse.

I'm trying to view the Online videos and can't get it to work.

  • Slides may not show if you have a dial up service or a small bandwidth.
  • Using the CDs or downloading the events are additional options if you cannot play the online videos.
  • Downloading an event will let you move forward and back and view slides. Warning! It is a long download. You will be able to view the event quickly but you will not be able to navigate until the download is complete. This could take 10 to 30 minutes depending on your internet connection.
  • If you have a MAC you can access the online videos using safari browser or use the MP3 audio files and the handouts.

Audio files

How do I use the audio files?
  • The audio presentations are in MP3 format.
  • The audio presentations can be listened to on your computer or downloaded onto your computer or portable devise.
  • There are copies of the lecture slides in the "Power Point handout - PDF" below each presentation.
  • To listen to a presentation: double clicking on link will open file and auto start the presentation. It will take 1-5 minutes to open in your computer. You may need to download Quicktime to play event.
  • To download a presentation: right click, click on "Save Target As" and you may then save file. The files are for one hour presentations. This creates long download times. Be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes for each download.
