California's older adult population is becoming more ethnically diverse.  Providing culturally appropriate and good quality care to ethnically diverse older adults and their families is an important challenge for our health care system.  This presentation will highlight issues in the assessment and management of Alzheimer's disease in ethnically diverse elders and practical solutions.

Update on assessment and management of Alzheimer’s Disease

The field of Alzheimer's diseae research is rapidly evolving.  This presentation will provide an overview of recent scientific developments in Alzheimer's Disease research and their relevance for primary care clinicians.  Topics that will be covered in this presentation include the role of vascular disease in the pathogenesis Alzheimer's disease, assesmsent and management of mild cognitive impairment, use of cognitive enhancers in persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

Identification and management of behavior issues in persons with dementia: Practical strategies for primary care

Behavioral problems in persons with Alzheimer's disease often lead to poor clinical outcomes and increased suffering for patients and families.  This presentation will provide an overview of the range of behavioral problems in pereson with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, assessment of behavioral problems, non-pharmacological approaches to behavior management, pros and cons of medication use in treating behavioral problems.   The emphasis will be on current treatment guidelines and practical approaches for the busy primary care clinician.
