OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the activity, the participant should be able to:
• Effectively screen for depression in a primary care setting
• Implement evidence-based treatment for depression
• Identify when it is appropriate to seek mental health consultation/referral
• Identify medically ill patients at highrisk for depression
• Describe the common symptoms or signs that overlap between medical and psychiatric illness
• Use appropriate history-taking and diagnostic studies to differentiate medical from psychiatric illness
• Provide evidence-based treatment for common co-morbid psychiatric illness within a medically ill patient
• Effectively screen for substance misuse
• Utilize motivational interviewing to assess readiness for change and activate motivated patients along the continuum of change behavior
• Identify evidence based treatments available in primary care settings for substance misuse disorders
• Engage mental health colleagues in collaborative care within existing models of health care delivery
• Develop/adapt new models of care to integrate mental health care into primary care settings
