Health Services Research examines some of the most complex and challenging issues in health care quality, and effectiveness, patient outcomes, access to care, and health care costs. The goals of this research are to improve the health of the public by contributing new knowledge about the effectiveness and costs of health care services and of alternative delivery systems and to influence public health care policy. The mission of the UC Davis Center for Healthcare Policy and Research is to facilitate research on the role of primary care in the health care system and on the interrelationships between health access, delivery, costs and patient outcomes.

With the wealth of biomedical knowledge and research, there is a need for individuals who can understand how to maximize the benefits of these advances. Health services research can contribute to improving access to, quality of, and costs of care. Health services research can also provide health care policy makers with the information they need to make decisions that improve the health care system.

Faculty at UC Davis are internationally known for applying the latest medical knowledge to real-world clinical problems. Fellowship program faculty is drawn from the disciplines of clinical medicine, statistics, economics, communication, management, and sociology. The UC Davis School of Medicine was founded in 1968 as the University of California’s flagship program in primary care. The UC Davis Health System has a long-standing tradition of high quality service delivery, education, and research in primary care. The PCOR Fellowship at UC Davis enjoys collaborative relationships with State agencies and public health organizations. By providing shared resources and opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange, the co-sponsorship of this fellowship by general, family, pediatric and geriatric medicine provides the opportunity for better training. Fellows will have access to shared knowledge and resources from other fellows and a diverse faculty. Common interests in care of the whole patient including the psychosocial aspects of illness leads to collaboration to integration of common clinical, educational, and research themes under a single program. Co-sponsorship also increases the efficiency of the fellowship, allowing broader access to a greater array of educational and research resources.

By the time of entry into the fellowship, the candidates must have completed an accredited residency program in internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatrics. Canditates for a combined geriatrics and health-service research fellowship must be independently accepted into the UC Davis Geriatrics Fellowship Program.
