These medications are members of the sulfonylurea class.

How sulfonylureas work

  • Works on the pancreas to increase insulin production

Guidelines for use

  • Take at the same time daily before meals
  • Taken once or twice per day, follow your physician’s orders
  • Glucotrol should be taken 30 minutes before meals
  • May be prescribed with other medications for treatment of diabetes

What to do if a dose is forgotten

  • It can be taken if it is less than 2 hours from your normal dosing time
  • Do not take 2 doses the next time

Side effects

  • Low blood sugar
  • Very rarely skin reaction, dark urine, stomach upset, increased sensitivity to the sun

Who should NOT take this medication

  • Some people with kidney or liver disease or allergies to sulfa drugs
  • Pregnant women
