UC Davis Children's Hospital Pulmonary (lung and bronchial)

The human body is a marvelously complex organism that performs many functions, both consciously and unconsciously. One function that we ordinarily take for granted but which is essential for life is respiration — the process of breathing. In normal breathing, tiny air sacs called alveoli within the lungs transfer oxygen to the bloodstream for use by cells throughout the body, while removing waste in the form of carbon dioxide. Conditions that interfere with the respiration process can be distressing or even life-threatening.

While runny noses, sneezing and coughing due to colds and influenza come and go throughout the childhood years, some kids experience far more persistent and serious respiratory distress. Wheezing, panting or labored breathing can indicate a condition requiring prompt, aggressive treatment.

UC Davis Children's Hospital maintains an outstanding pulmonary services unit that cares for infants, children and adolescents who have lung and breathing disorders. Pulmonology is the branch of medicine devoted to diagnosis and treatment of lung and breathing problems—bronchiopulmonary conditions. The “bronchio-” prefix refers to the bronchial tubes, which are the air ducts leading into the lungs. The term “pulmonary” relates to functions and structures of the lungs.

UC Davis Children's Hospital pediatric pulmonary services encompass a Pediatric Asthma Program and a Cystic Fibrosis Care Center accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Our staff members also offer expertise in diagnosis and treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary malformations and chronic lung diseases that can be caused by premature birth, infections, genetic disorders and sleep-related respiratory disorders such as apnea of prematurity. Advanced diagnosis is available by means of our pediatric flexible bronchoscopy technology, and we conduct a comprehensive pediatric patient and family education program.

UC Davis Children's Hospital sponsors a Cystic Fibrosis Support Group for patients and their families. During the quarterly meetings held at the hospital, guest speakers discuss cystic fibrosis research, management and treatment.
