The UC Davis Children's Hospital Nephrology Clinic team consists of four pediatric nephrologists, two clinical nurse specialists, a social worker, a dietician and an administrative assistant.

Lavjay Butani, M.D. - Lavjay Butani, the Chief of Pediatric Nephrology, has board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatric nephrology. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Transplantation, International Pediatric Transplantation Association, Western Society of Pediatric Research, American Federation for Medical Research and the Sacramento Pediatric Society. He specializes in the treatment of children with a wide variety of kidney diseases included high blood pressure, urologic diseases, prenatally diagnosed kidney abnormalities, and kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation. His main research interests are focused on improving the outcomes after kidney transplantation by optimally using newer immunosuppressive medications and regimens for children who have had kidney transplants and also studying the implications of calcium excretion in the urine on the risk of stones and osteoporosis in children of different ethnic backgrounds.

Sudesh P. Makker, M.D. - Sudesh Makker is a professor and the senior nephrologist in the section. He has board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric nephrology and has authored a textbook of Pediatric Nephrology. He is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and a member of a number of professional and scientific societies including American Academy of Pediatrics, American Pediatric Society, Society for Pediatric Research, American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, American Society for Investigative Pathology, American Association of Immunologists and the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. He is listed among American Men and Women of Science, Outstanding Scientists of 21^st Century, America's Top Pediatricians, America's Top Physicians and Who's Who in America.

Sudesh Makker is an eminent expert in the diagnosis and treatment of glomerulonephritides and nephrotic syndrome and has vast experience in the management of various other kidney disorders in children including congenital and inherited diseases, hypertension, metabolic disorders, and end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Since the late 1970s the National Institutes of Health has continually funded his investigations of the pathobiology and molecular biology of glomerular diseases, research for which he is internationally known. He is a member of the reviewing panels of the National Institute of Health and many scientific journals including the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of the American Society Nephrology, Kidney International, Nature Clinical Practice, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, Hypertension, Journal of Pediatrics, American Journal of Pathology, Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, and other scientific journals. He has been involved with the American Society of Nephrology Key Contact Network, American Society of Pediatric Nephrology Committee on National Standards for Dialysis and Transplantation in Children, and National Kidney Foundation of Northern California Medical Advisory Board.

Maha N. Haddad, M.D. - Dr Haddad is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and joined UC Davis in July 2006. She finished her pediatric nephrology training from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr Haddad has a passion for caring for children with kidney disease. Her main areas of interest are the overall well being of children with chronic kidney disease, bone metabolism and IgA nephropathy.

Keith K. Lau, M.D. - Dr. Lau is as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and recently joined the Section of Pediatric Nephrology. He trained at the University of Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Lau is currently a member of the American Federation of Medical Research, International Society of Hemodialysis, American Society of Nephrology and American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. Clinically, Dr. Lau is particularly interested in glomerulonephritis in children, especially on the outcomes of children from minority groups. His research interests include the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and Henoch Schonlein Purpura nephritis. Dr. Lau is currently collaborating with a group at the University of Birmingham in Alabama to study the role of abnormally glycosylated IgA1 molecule as a biomarker of IgA nephropathy.

Gerre Berg, RN, BSN and Yolanda Schjoneman - Gerre Berg and Yolanda Schjoneman are clinical resource nurses with the Section of Nephrology, and bring with them enormous experience in taking care of children with a variety of kidney diseases in both the in-patient and out-patient setting. They are responsible for coordinating the care of children with kidney diseases and act as valuable liaisons between the physicians, patients, patient families and other ancillary services/consultants, to ensure provision of excellent care.

Karralynn Keefe, MSW - Karralynn Keefe is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, specializing in working with children and families. Karralynn graduated with a Masters in Social Work in 1995 and received special licensing as a Clinical Social Worker in 1998. She has received extensive training in areas of counseling, crisis management, and Medical Social Work. The social worker in the Nephrology Clinic works closely with families assisting them with a variety of services that impact their child's health issues. With the diagnosis of kidney disease there are a number of stressors that can and do arise. The social worker is trained to offer supportive services and referrals to help families cope during this stressful time.
