CAARE Center
Children who become ill or injured as a result of parental abuse or neglect require extraordinary care. To respond to the needs of those children, the UC Davis Children's Hospital has dedicated a specialized facility—the Child and Adolescent Abuse Resources and Evaluation Diagnostic Center (CAARE Center). Medical personnel who staff the CAARE Center work closely with law enforcement, justice department and child protective services agencies to treat and shield children who are under threat or have endured abuse.
Also known as the Child Protection Center, the facility performs physical examinations to confirm whether or not injuries resulted from sexual or physical abuse. It also offers psychological counseling to assist children who are subjected to sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse or neglect. While signs of physical abuse are often obvious, sexual abuse and neglect can be more subtle and difficult to detect by anyone but an expert.
Case management functions within the CAARE Center include administration of the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Team, a case review group encompassing representatives of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, city of Sacramento Police Department, child protective services agencies and other organizations. The CAARE Center makes referrals when appropriate to the Sacramento County Victim/Witness Assistance Center and the California Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board.
So highly esteemed is the CAARE Center that it has been enlisted by the Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice Planning to conduct Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) training for child abuse treatment agencies. PCIT techniques are effective in helping parents manage their Children's behavioral problems, and in helping parents and children find common ground on which to improve their relationships with one another. CAARE Center team members have conducted PCIT training programs for numerous agencies throughout California as well as in Texas, Florida, Washington, Alaska and Australia. The CAARE Center also conducts a Clinical Psychology Training Program for predoctoral and postdoctoral students.
