Your child's health-care team
As a teaching hospital, UC Davis Children's Hospital coordinates the efforts of many skilled specialists and support staff to provide the best pediatric care possible. The team members are selected according to your child’s diagnosis and health-care needs. The hospital practices family-centered care because we believe the best care occurs when the patient’s families and health-care providers work together. That means you, as the parent or guardian, are a vital member of this team.
Physicians
Several licensed doctors oversee medical care for your child, including an intern who handles day-to-day care, a supervising resident and an attending physician who is a UC Davis School of Medicine faculty member. In addition, a medical student, who is under the direct supervision of a team of doctors, may follow your child's progress. It is the attending physician, however, who is responsible for your child’s overall care. Please feel free to consult any of these doctors when you have questions or concerns.

Nurses
Each child will be assigned a primary nurse, who is a registered nurse, to coordinate your child’s care in the main pediatric unit. Nurses are grouped into a color team of blue, green or red. Your child will be assigned a team and cared for by this primary nurse and associate nurses when possible. If your child should be readmitted, the same team of nurses will regroup to provide care.
An all-R.N. nursing staff provides exceptional patient care. The Advisory Board, a national health-care group, has recognized UC Davis’ quality nursing environment by awarding it “destination hospital” recognition.
When a child comes to UC Davis Children's Hospital, he or she is assigned a “primary” nurse who is responsible for coordinating the child’s nursing care. This ensures better continuity of care, improves communication with parents and helps each child feel more comfortable in the hospital. Each nurse cares for no more than three to four patients on the general inpatient floors, and only one to two patients in the intensive care units.

Child-life program
Child-life specialists are available Monday through Friday. These professionals are specially trained in child development and can assist your child in understanding and coping with illness, injury and being in the hospital. They are also available to accompany your child during medical procedures.
Social workers
Pediatric social-services representatives are available to assist your child or your family in coping with the hospitalization. The social worker also can provide referrals to community resources and special programs designed to meet your child’s needs.
Other professionals
During your child’s hospital stay, you may rely upon the expertise of a variety of professionals, including a chaplain, dietitian, respiratory therapist, physical therapist or discharge planner.
