Community training sites
Community medicine ambulatory training
In this experience the resident works in different community pediatricians' offices seeing common outpatient pediatric problems. The clinics are located east of Sacramento in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The goal of this rotation is to mimic, as closely as possible, the typical practice of a community-based pediatrician. Typically, residents spend four weeks on this rotation during their second or third year of training.
Kaiser hospital clinics
During the third year of training all residents have an opportunity to spend four weeks working as a general pediatrician in one of the Kaiser outpatient clinics in the Sacramento region. This rotation provides a unique opportunity for residents to experience the "cutting-edge" of managed care and to function in an environment providing significant autonomy. It is among the most popular of all rotations with the residents.
Shriners hospitals for children
In June 1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children, which focuses on crippling diseases in children, opened the largest and most complete of its 22 hospitals next to the UC Davis Medical Center campus. Residents rotating through the outpatient clinics gain a unique exposure to pediatric orthopaedics, genetics, rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine and outpatient burn management. Every resident spends 4 weeks at Shriners with the option of completing additional elective experiences there as well. Residents on subspecialty elective also frequently perform consults at Shriners.
