Advocacy training for residents
School Health Program
Children and adolescents spend much of their time at school and their relationships with teachers are recognized as being among the most influential in their lives. In the school health program, residents teach elementary school students a health curriculum and observe school health activities.
While on the Ambulatory rotation, residents spend several mornings working with school nurses and teachers to teach health-related educational projects. In addition to strengthening their teaching skills, residents learn the structure of the school system and the environment in which their patients spend most of their time. Residents also serve as a resource to teachers and parents in their assigned school, providing them with information about health topics. The school health program is part of the county medical society Adopt-A-School program.
