Nephrology and kidney transplantation
The kidneys are vital organs that filter harmful chemicals from the blood, produce urine to eliminate these chemicals and also get rid of the extra water that we drink and recirculate important proteins back into the bloodstream. Urine is retained in the bladder before leaving the body.
Kidney disease is a major cause of illness and death among children and may result from babies being born with missing or malformed kidneys, urinary tract obstructions, genetic disorders, cysts, or other diseases. Kidney or urinary tract disorders can cause a child to develop swelling, fever, frequent or painful urination, increased blood pressure, or difficulty in controlling urination.
Pediatric nephrologists at UC Davis care for children with diseases of the kidney, including acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, hematuria, proteinuria, kidney stones and hypertension. Children who eventually require transplantation will benefit from UC Davis’ nationally recognized kidney transplant program.
UC Davis Children's Hospital conducts the only pediatric nephrology program in the Sacramento region. Members of the UC Davis Children's Hospital pediatric nephrology medical team are nationally recognized for advances in treatment and research studies benefiting patients who have chronic diseases of the kidney. We attribute our success to our team approach, enabling transplant surgeons, urologists, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, dietitians, and clinical nurses to jointly participate in the care of our patients.
We are also the only hospital in inland Northern California to offer outpatient dialysis for patients under 10 years of age or 44 pounds.
Our diagnostic and therapeutic services include:
- Peritoneal dialysis
- Continuous dialysis (also called CRRT or CVVH)
- Renal biopsy
- Evaluations and treatments for disorders including nephrotic syndrome, high blood pressure, kidney infections, and kidney stones
- Renal transplantation
Advanced inpatient and outpatient clinical care is available at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital pediatric nephrology clinic for children with kidney disorders.
