Use of Folic Acid to Decrease Incidence of Cleft Lip and Palate

It has recently been suggested that vitamins, particularly folic acid, decrease neural tube defects and may decrease the incidence of cleft lip and palate. This multicenter study, in which UC San Francisco and UC Davis will participate as partners, will determine the effectiveness of folic acid in preventing cleft lip or cleft palate. The results may have special implications for at-risk families in which there is already a child with cleft lip or palate. The project will be funded by a grant from the March of Dimes.
