New mural to adorn entry to the Children's Surgery Center
Muralist Kent Peterson is busily creating a beautiful, calming work of art that will greet children traveling down the more than 120-foot-long corridor leading to the Children’s Surgery Center, located on the first floor of the hospital. The vast majority of pediatric surgeries take place in the Children’s surgery Center. The mural should be completed at the end of August/beginning of September.
Peterson said that, to create the artwork, he starts from the back and works forward, first placing the ocean colors and sand, and then adding the sunken pirate ship and coral reefs and, finally, the sea life, such as fish, crabs and starfish. The portion of the mural that will extend into the reception area will have more “kid-friendly” elements, such as a puzzle with hidden characters for children to search for on the ocean floor.
Peterson said that, after a career as a church music director, he decided to pursue his love of art full time. He has been a muralist for more than 12 years, and recently created a jungle scene mural for patients in the pediatric infusion center in the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.
