Services offered for cancer-related clinical, population and basic science research include:

  • Grant proposal preparation
  • Clinical trial design, analysis, and monitoring (Phase I, II and III; single or multi-site)
  • Study design including sample size and power calculation
  • Statistical sections for IRB applications
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Manuscript, abstract, and presentation review and preparation
  • Response to reviewer comments
  • Mentoring of cancer research trainees (fellows, junior faculty)

We strongly advise early involvement of the Biostatistics Shared Resource, or BSR, in study planning. All proposals that come to the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center's Scientific Review Board are reviewed for statistical content (study design, analysis plan, etc.) and appropriate biostatistics support, and the BSR is happy to assist with this planning.

For grant planning, please contact the BSR at least 4-6 weeks before the proposal is due to review the aims, preliminary results and methods, even if not in final form. The BSR will provide statistical sections including sample size and power, analysis methods, updated and targeted biosketch, letter of support (if needed) and budget from the BSR grants manager. A minimum of six weeks’ notice with more complex projects such as program projects, center applications and multi-site trials is recommended. Please allow for more time if analysis of preliminary data is needed.

Office hours

To efficiently and effectively meet the statistical needs of UC Davis Cancer Center members, the UC Davis Cancer Center Biostatistics Shared Resource – in collaboration with the UC Davis CTSC – maintains “office hours” for statistical consultations. These office hours are an opportunity for investigators to consult with a statistician about the design, analysis, or presentation of medical research studies in a friendly, informal setting.

Every Tuesday, 12 - 2 p.m. via WebEx
Statisticians: Machelle Wilson, Ph.D., and Lihong Qi, Ph.D.
Reserve a time slot

First and third Mondays, 1 - 2 p.m. via WebEx
Statisticians: LiHong Qi, Ph.D., and Sandra Taylor, Ph.D.
Reserve a time slot

Due to the popularity of these programs, investigators interested in attending an office hours event are asked to reserve a spot in advance. Limit of 1 spot per week per project for up to 2 projects.

Cost for services

Biostatistics help on grant proposals is provided free of charge. For other biostatistics assistance, up to 10 hours of unfunded support per project is provided for comprehensive cancer center members. Please check with the BSR director for costs for additional services

Acknowledging the Biostatistics Shared Resource

Publications that have utilized the BSR must acknowledge the resource and the assistance provided by resource staff and cite the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant. Please send an electronic copy of the final publication to the BSR director.

The BSR suggests the following acknowledgement statement:

This research was supported by the Biostatistics Shared Resource, funded by the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Support Grant awarded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI P30CA093373).”
