Ms. Susan Shinagawa is a leading national advocate for cancer awareness in the medically underserved populations, particularly focusing on the Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders. She is a three times breast cancer survivor, having discovery a lump in her right breast during a self breast-examination. Her story of survival and triumph has been profiled many times in local and national organizations, including the National Cancer Institute, Audrey magazine, Livestrong, and The Truth about Chronic Pain: Patient and Professionals on how to face it, a book by Arthur Rosenfield.

Susan describes herself as a “professional volunteer” being involved in many community organizations and advocacy programs. Susan co-founded the Asian and Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivor Network along with Reverend Frank Chong. In 2010, she received a Laurel Award for Advocacy from the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Susan is also the composer of the song “My Heroes,” a song dedicated to all those who helped through the struggle after she first defeated breast cancer in 1193. An audio copy of the song along with the lyrics can be found on our website.

In addition to advocating for cancer prevention and screening, Susan also advocates for ethical methods of chronic pain management and Hepatitis B related liver cancer awareness.
