Dr. Desai has over 20 years of experience in cancer research and grant submissions. She has substantial experience assisting investigators in preparing grant proposals, grant budgets and budget justifications, responses to reviewers, and manuscript preparation and review. Dr. Desai has assisted investigators with individual grants and career development awards, as well as large, collaborative, multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator efforts such as center grants and program grants. She has experience with grant submission to many state and federal agencies [i.e., National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP)] and private and foundation grants [i.e., American Cancer Society (ACS), Komen Foundation, Safeway Foundation]. Dr. Desai earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Davis working on mechanisms of androgen independence in prostate cancer with Dr Hsing-Jien Kung. She did a postdoc at UCSF looking at mechanical effects of stromal rigidity on breast cancer progression and another postdoc at UC Davis investigating mutations in the EGFR family of receptor tyrosine kinases present in clinical samples of lung cancer and breast cancer. Prior to graduate school, Dr. Desai worked in the pharmaceutical industry identifying selective estrogen receptor modulators for treatment of osteoporosis, nerve growth factor mimetics for treatment of peripheral neuropathies due to chemotherapy, and kinase inhibitors for treatment of immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Desai co-teaches a two-quarter course on grant writing through the CTSC and has previously taught Chemistry at Folsom Lake College. She has published multiple scientific manuscripts and book chapters in top, peer-reviewed journals.
